This exhibition showcases four cross-generational ceramic artists PJ Hargraves, Drew Ippoliti, Morgan Jones, and Kayla Weinman who serve as catalysts for each other’s stories and expressions. Together, they explore the potential of the medium and their distinct points of view. Each artist looks at the aesthetic beauty and humor of ceramics, while each work represents a feat of gravity and an opportunity to laugh at the absurdity of building in mud.
PJ Hargraves hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is currently the 3D Technician for the Myers School of Art at The University of Akron. In addition to working at Myers, Hargraves is an adjunct faculty member at Cuyahoga Community College and teaches continuing education at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Hargraves has been an artist–in–residence at the LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska; the Mid Atlantic Keramik Exchange in Reykjavik, Iceland; and most recently was Visiting Artist–in–Residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. Hargraves earned an MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2020, and a BFA in Ceramics from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2017 along with a K-12 Art Education Certificate. Hargraves has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally and is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. Hargraves will be exhibited at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference in 2025 in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition to teaching classes and workshops for kids and adults, Hargraves enjoys the labor of the studio, including building and fixing kilns and helping students troubleshoot problems with materials and firing.
Drew Ippoliti is an American artist, researcher and educator; his artwork investigates how ceramics can explore and explain the regions where culture and craft collide. In 2019 Ippoliti was awarded a Fulbright Scholars Fellowship to South Korea where he served as a Visiting Professor of Design at Kookmin University’s College of Design. In South Korea, Ippoliti’s research focuses on discussing economic growth and slumps as well as these market forces influences on the reception of fine art. Ippoliti currently serves as Associate Professor of Ceramics Department Coordinator at the University of Guam, in Mangilao Guam. Additionally, Ippoliti serves as a Fulbright Scholar Alumni Ambassador. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in multiple public and private collections internationally in Denmark, Holland, China, Taiwan and South Korea.
Morgan Jones started their art–centered education at The University of Akron, graduating with a Fine Arts Degree in 2019. Focusing on ceramics, they explored multiple sculptural methods and materials to create their bodies of work. During this time, they took part in art exhibitions around Akron, Kent, and Cleveland. After graduating, Jones took the opportunity to move across the country to Missoula, Montana, where they were welcomed into the University of Montana post-baccalaureate program in ceramics. It was the influence from this location that gave Jones the opportunity to explore natural elements with their sculptural ceramic work. This work was featured at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference in 2023. Most recently Morgan was given the opportunity to work with The University of Akron as an instructor for the introduction to ceramics. They have taken this opportunity to build their relationship with their local art community in Ohio.
Kayla Weinman is a local Ohio–based artist. She possesses a Bachelor of Fine Art in Ceramics from The University of Akron. Weinman’s current art interests include a focus on ceramic attire and the effects it can have on one’s appearance. Weinman is an instructor at various universities and art centers including Wayne Arts Center and The Myers School of Art at The University of Akron. Her artwork is also held in various public and private Ohio–based art collections.
