Fall Exhibitions Open at Summit Artspace on October 4

Welcome!

As summer comes to a close and we prepare to hibernate in winter, this fall exhibition cycle brings a feeling of comfort and familiarity to viewers. Themes of the home are present throughout many of the exhibitions, featuring domestic spaces and local landscapes. The 22nd Annual Kaleidoscope Juried Exhibition— featuring artwork from six artist membership groups in the Betty and Howard Taylor Main Gallery— is a reminder of the importance of community for artists and provides a wonderful snapshot of our current arts landscape. Members of one of those groups, Artists of Rubber City, are also exhibiting in the Intersections Gallery. These groups help to provide a sense of belonging and “home-base”, fostering essential peer networks that create a robust artist ecosystem. Two exhibitions depict the natural world around us and the structures that exist within it. Greg Caudill’s work in the Welcome Gallery, while inspired by pre-historic times, is strongly connected to the flora of Northeast Ohio and features rock formations as the primary subject. The artists in Ohio Revisited: What Once Was, on view in the Forum Gallery, personify former landmarks in the region that have been abandoned and now overcome with nature through their varying media. In the Horizon Gallery, mixed media paintings by Linsday Martin Gryskewich are grounded in the domestic landscape, blending imagery of indoor and outdoor spaces with the aesthetics of surrealism and comfort. While visiting these shows and learning more about the artists, I invite you to identify elements of the work that provide solace to you, and to question why they bring about that feeling.

22nd Annual Kaleidoscope Juried Exhibition

Kaleidoscope is an annual holiday show presented by the Alliance for the Visual Arts (AVA). This show is open to all members of AVA organizations: Akron Society of Artists (ASA), Artists of Rubber City (AoRC), Cuyahoga Valley Art Center (CVAC), Medina County Art League (MCAL), Ohio Collage Society (OSC), and Women’s Art League of Akron (WAL). This year’s exhibition is juried by art consultant and curator Meg Stanton.

Welcome Gallery
Totally Stoned | Greg Caudill

Rock formations in primitive landscapes become personified in Caudill’s work. The setting and style of paleoart infused with textured layering of paint defines the artist’s acrylic paintings. Dubbed the “anti-Bob Ross” for his use of brutal brushstrokes, Caudill has formed his own unique landscape style.

Intersections Gallery
Artists of Rubber City Member Exhibition

Based in Akron, Ohio, Artists of Rubber City (established in 1978) is a network of artists and art lovers who support each other’s creative endeavors. If you are interested in where the rubber hits the road in the Akron art community, this is the show for you!

Forum Gallery
Ohio Reclaimed: What Once Was | Group Exhibition

This exhibition explores real Northeast Ohio landmarks in the midst of being reclaimed by nature. From the ferris wheel at Chippewa Lake to the locks in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, each location is examined through multiple mediums; poetry by Theresa Göttl Brightman, photography by Mary Defer, and paintings by Dee Fairweather. The work prompts questions about who the land belongs to—humankind or Mother Nature.

Horizon Gallery
Environ: in transport of delight | Lindsay Martin Gryskewich

Blending real and imaginary spaces, Gryskewich creates a map of everyday musings in her work. These texturally dense paintings fluidly combine interior and exterior spaces to form playful compositions that mirror life’s permanent spaces and temporary changes. The artist retraces her own surroundings as inspiration colors at twilight in the garden, or perspectives from the family room window.

Wall to Wall
Alexia Avdelas | Diana Rice | Lizzi Aronhalt | P31 Art

Wall-to-Wall is a program that showcases the work of Summit Artspace resident artists throughout the building’s hallways.

BOX Gallery
Resident organization Artists of Rubber City presents a solo exhibition by local artist Georgio Sabino III in The BOX Gallery, located on the third floor of the Summit Artspace. From October 4 – 26, Sabino will explore mixed mediums and augmented reality.
