From October 19 through November 17, 2018, The BOX Gallery in downtown Akron is proud to present two exhibitions: The Sea of Tranquility featuring work by Valerie Buynak and Expressions in Black and White: drawings by Thomas Reiderman. Meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday, October 19, 5-8 PM.
Valerie Buynak, Kent State University part-time faculty member in drawing, received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and her MFA from Kent State University in 2017. Her work in The Sea of Tranquility references the moon—a barren, flat basin that holds no water or air. To visually express this landscape without a defining sense of geography has an inherent mysticism to it, a silent and wordless experience. Things that are not seen but only viscerally felt inspire her work.
Thomas Reiderman is a dedicated member of the Artists of Rubber City serving as the organizations Secretary since 2011. In his exhibition Expressions in Black and White: drawings by Thomas Reiderman, he communicates his fascination with stark images often in black and white to convey the simplest, most direct artistic expression. Curves and fluidity are common in his drawings – yet straight lines and sharp shapes such as pyramids have recently been a common feature of his work.
The BOX Gallery is open to the public during exhibitions on Fridays and Saturdays from 12-5 PM. Additionally, The BOX Gallery is open for Akron Artwalk on Saturday, November 3, 5-9PM and for 3rd Thursday on Thursday, November 15, 5-9PM. Admission is to the BOX is FREE and open to the public.
