Artist Bio: Being creative has tied together a lifetime of varied roles. While writing has always been the foundation, in 2019 I finally decided to pursue a lifelong interest as a visual artist. Previously I had worked part time in stained glass, and from 1994-2014 as an Emmy-award winning PBS documentary maker.

In 2012, my husband was diagnosed unexpectedly with young onset Alzheimer’s. This forced simplicity and clarity.

So 2019 brought a new artistic focus, as well as acceptance and awards in juried photography shows. December 2019 included a solo exhibition with 50+ pieces of photography and assemblages.

It’s time to create.

One Fine Day

Artist Statement: I have made all the multicolored glass pieces by kiln casting and fusing, and by glass blowing. Many of the pieces are hand beveled for prismatic effects. Three dimensional pieces stand proud of the surface. Advanced glass blowing techniques provide interesting patterns of color: spun glass threads are blown into a water spout, plaid fused and beveled mountain, fused garden and city parts, the sun disc is the smallest rondel I can blow and spin. This Utopia is like a catalog of all the glass making techniques I know.

Artist Bio: Bob Pozarski is an Akron glass artist since 1976, making stained glass windows, kiln cast and blown glass art. He also teaches beginning and advanced glass blowing at the Peninsula Art Academy. Bob sells his glass at fine area art and craft shows like the Akron Arts Expo and Ohio Mart at Stan Hywet. He has a display of twenty glass works at the Highland Square Mustard Seed Cafe, currently quarantined.

Artist Statement: Planet Earth belongs to no one and welcomes everyone. I imagine a utopian world as a place where everyone has a place. A world where peace reigns in hearts and division between people ceases.

A forest is like nature’s cathedral. The feeling of stepping into an old cathedral is similar to that of stepping into a forest. Peace and awe pervade both nature’s biological structures and man’s archaeological tributes to a Creator.

A cathedral belongs to no one and should be a place that welcomes everyone. A place where everyone has a place.

Artist Bio: Elise Radzialowski is an illustrator and artist. She recently graduated from the University of Akron Myers School of Art with a BFA in Painting and Drawing and a minor in Illustration. Her goal is to spend life creating art every day. Her work often uses imagery from Grimm’s fairy tales applied to contemporary issues. Currently she lives and creates in Cleveland, Ohio.

Artist Statement: My You-Topia is based on the summer trips we made with my daughter and her three friends to Lakeside. It is one of those places that is very family friendly and the girls loved it there. I based my work on sketches that I did of some of the houses, coffee shop, gardens, and the mayflies.

Artist Bio: I taught art for 36 years before retiring in 2015; 17 years in Albany NY and 19 in Ohio at Hoover High School in North Canton. We now live in Medina Ohio and are involved in several organizations including the Medina County Art League where I am the High School Scholarship Chairman.

Artist Statement: I was looking out our window the other day, and I tried to imagine what the world would look like when the pandemic had ended. I found my mind blank; all I could think of was a deep want to be better. For people to heal and feel better, for our government to put people first, for us as humans to put our earth first- for all of us to do better, to be better. This drawing is my expression of hope; hope that when we beat this virus, we will be stronger and better in every way.

Artist Statement: It’s a strange time to be alive, and what’s better in strange times than art? We all need to find some form of expression. My You-topia is process, ongoing creation. As a new mother, I’ve been in quarantine since the birth of my son. I have had to rediscover my You-topia, and make time for it. It’s helped to heal me from childbirth, and to find myself again. This work is a creative burst, one small bright thought among many darker ones. I hope my moments of clarity help to bring that same peace to others.

Artist Statement: This painting from my new Horse Ballet series, Andalusian Ballon, depicts a utopian horse-lover’s world where our steads literally float on air. What a smooth ride!

Andalusian black stallion Kairo floats above the ground. He looks magnificent and regal with his head held high, defying gravity – suspended in the air. In basketball, this is called hang time. In dressage – impulsion. In ballet – it’s called ballon, defined by Wikipedia as “appearance of being lightweight and light-footed while jumping….making it seem as though a dancer effortlessly becomes airborne, floats in the air.”

Et voila – Kairo in utopia!

Artist Bio: With a goal of capturing beautiful moments in the lives of horses, Karen Brenner hopes her paintings bring joy to art and horse lovers alike. The Wooster artist has been creating oil paintings of horses for over 20 years. She enjoys traveling throughout the USA to photograph horses for reference material.

Artist Statement: This picture is my WOW Friend. Her birthday occurred during the Stay-at-Home order for COVID-19. Celebrating with friends would not occur, instead the two of us went grocery shopping. Then she received her present in the parking lot. She gave me the present of a smile. Not the typical celebration, but improvising there was shared joy between friends. Each of us has a ‘you’ that being with trumps the location. That you could be family, friend(s), a pet, or the deceased. Vacations, family homesteads even parking lots become special when they create the joy of Being With You.

Artist Statement: A New Life, the title of my pastel drawing, has special resonance during the COVID-19 Pandemic with its pain and suffering. My Utopia drawing illustrates the development of a new world, represented by an egg, that is hatching from darkness and nothingness. It is developing from flowering plants and promising hope.

Artist Bio: I discovered my artistic side during medical school in Istanbul after encountering numerous adults and especially children suffering from medical disorders and adversities. During that time, I started to pencil draw portraits of children and landscapes. I progressed to drawing with pastels. I was exhilarated and free whenever I was doing art. I participated in my first art exhibition during medical school. I have continued to draw and paint until this time; however, I am not as productive as I wanted to be due to the constraints of my professional life.

Artist Statement: Every person has their own idea of utopia. In this construction the question is a puzzle with a missing piece. The answer is behind a locked door that is opened with a key.

Artist Bio: I began to do cartoons in medical school as a therapy for stress. Many of these were published in medical journals. I progressed to abstract multimedia art using words, phrases or photographs for inspiration after I was able to build a shop in my home. Generally the “constructions” begin with geometric shapes drawn with India Ink using drafting tools on poster board. The shapes are filled with blocks of wood, acrylic colors, glass, metal, or circuit boards. The board is then glued to Masonite. I may cut holes through the surface to add another dimension to the product.

Artist Statement: I worked with shapes that I have sketched and used them on different papers. I wanted to create a piece that could show how different shapes and textures work together. I used plastic film, oil pastels, ink, tape and acrylic paint. The finished piece is a capsule or cocoon shape that will protect us during these trying times. The butterfly shape is all of us being safe and getting ready to return to a changed world.

Artist Bio: David Kish was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. He graduated from St. Vincent – St. Mary High School in 1977. David started his art career at an early age, learning from his father, the late Robert L. Kish, an accomplished fine artist and working commercial artist. David attended The University of Akron and graduated with a BFA degree in Graphic Design in 1983. He has been employed by the Summit County Executive’s Office for over twenty six years. David has continued to create his own illustrations and art by utilizing and expanding his interest in line, shape, texture and color.

Artist Statement: I work with found materials. It may be actual detritus or in this inkjet print, I researched images of jazz great Louis Armstrong. Music often inspires my work. The Louisiana oak tree seemed a good starting point to place Louis Armstrong. Then I found images of him and his winning smile to show the joy he continues to give.

Artist Statement: As a photographer, genealogist and lover of all things having to do with the water, MY-topia would be living in a coastal town on the East Coast of England. I chose this photo because it represents everything I love… a small community – arts & culture – history – photography – and coastal waters. Buildings and shops that haven’t changed in over 500 yrs. Coast lines that fought wars dating back to the Romans. A variety of cultures not common to the USA. Countries so close, you can visit them in the time it takes to fly to California or Florida. A new world to explore!

Artist Bio: I am a self-taught photographer and genealogist. I have been an office manager for 31 years in the legal community. I am 62 with 2 children and 3 grandchildren. I took up photography on a serious level after I quit smoking and began walking the towpaths. My goal was to someday let my artwork – “work” for me. I called it my “10 year retirement plan”. I wanted to photograph as much as I could before I couldn’t anymore. I photograph everything from A-Z. I want my work to be natural and inspire others to see the beauty around them.

Artist Statement: The optimist declares that this is the best of all possible worlds. Oddly enough, the pessimist also grumbles that this is the best of all possible worlds. The moral? Utopia is what you make it. Enormo (the Wonderhead) has seen better, as has glassy-eyed Gloria. But, both have also seen a heck of a lot worse. They travel well enough together, and, as Enormo (the Wonderhead)’s attributes are incrementally revealed, perhaps Gloria’s glass morphs to half-full.

Artist Statement: For some odd reason, we tend to view our utopias in the rear-view mirror. Mythology is brimming with Edens and Golden Ages and First Cycles, lost eras when all was happiness and light. But these rose-colored pseudo-memories are flawed from the get-go. How accurately will a future society recall our age? A post-apocalyptic people may misremember even the lowly Saturday night drive-in as a past Utopia.

Artist Statement: We view Pig Chairs Atom Exit Bitten through the eyes of an ecstatic first-time museum visitor. Eager to absorb this new Elysium in its entirety, our visitor bounds from image to image, determined to see it all. A temporary Utopia, perhaps – flawed by a looming closing time, by the sheer number of pieces, by the inevitable degradation of canvas to dust – but all the more wonderful for these defects.

Artist Statement: Winters’ current work focuses on both the celebration of the earth and reflects her deep concern about its preservation and the fate of our fellow creatures. Mother Earth with Babies is one of her more positive works depicting Mother Earth holding babies of endangered species. Winters believes that we should all live “in reverence for life and harmony with all creation.” She hopes that one of the lessons of this time of crisis will be to learn to live more gentle upon the earth.

Artist Bio: Laurel Winters received her BFA and MFA degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Although her degrees focus on painting, drawing and printmaking, Winters enjoys a wide range of media, which has been helpful in her career as a teaching artist in workshops, private schools and colleges.
