Winners in the Poe’s Garden Visual Arts Juried Show, 2019

Poe's Garden
Ed Allan Poe by Ron White, First Place, Poe’s Garden Visual Arts Show

Artist Statement

My Ed Poe is representing a Poe that died early in his life… it is so sad that he was just beginning to get known as a great poet.. as I read in a blog about his life. This sculpture is in black and white to represent the period and ink on paper as there will be text… I hope … in the show

Poe's Garden
Catacombs by Emily Butcher, Second Place, Poe’s Garden Visual Arts Show

Artist Statement

“Catacombs”, my 11”x14” original oil on canvas, represents elements of Edgar Allen Poe’s Cask of Amontillado, where the more sinister parts of man are hard at work inside the catacombs, a place which is both eerie and yet a romantic notion. Each skull a human being, yet not one can help the man buried within the walls of the tomb. He’s surrounded by people, but completely alone.

Poe's Garden
Nevermore by Tom Baldwin, Third Place, Poe’s Garden Visual Arts Show

Artist Statement

When thinking of Edgar Allan Poe, one almost always relates to the magnificent big black bird, the Raven. This piece represents the attitude of this neat bird versus the poetic designed function.

Poe's Garden
Last Kiss by Constance Laessig, Honorable Mention, Poe’s Garden Visual Arts Show

Artist Statement

Using a Black Witch Moth which signifies death, and a head buried in leaves kissing the inside of the glass, I was both inspired by the idea of Poe’s story of being buried alive, and Mother Nature dying at his time of year and kissing us goodbye…for now.

Poe's Garden
Inky Cap Mushrooms by Meaghan Jodoin Herbert, Honorable Mention, Poe’s Garden Visual Arts Show

Artist Statement

While wondering through the winding paths of Poe’s Garden, you stop and see this wonderful little blue mushroom only to find it oozing with a black ink like substance. So charming, yet you will have to think twice about eating this one.

Poe's Garden
Life is a Beach by Joshua Fitzgerald, Honorable Mention, Poe’s Garden Visual Arts Show

Artist Statement

This is an HDR image, printed on metal, that was taken at an undisclosed Catholic Church that was built in 1890 and finally abandoned in 1992. It has been purchased and is being renovated into an auditorium/concert hall because of the acoustics in all of the high Gothic arches and the enormous flat, open area.
